General formatting is applied to the cell. That pref simply determines whether a zero is displayed when calculation results compute to zero or when only a zero is typed into a cell when It would be helpful to others if you would Apparently, the MSFT Agent who marked that as an Answer doesn't understand that any better than the one who posted it.
